2.  TANHA, RAGA AND ARATI

IDENTITY STAINING takes place within operations of SENSATION, DISCRIMINATION, PERCEPTION,and COGNITION, with corresponding effects within CONSCIOUSNESS where the IDENTITY (me and mine) is clearly reflected.

The IDENTITY we consider as the staining agent and arises when PERCEPTION has generated the memory trace information retrieved and existing as separate from all other elements.

While memory has involved an amazingly effective system of storing and categorizing information the compartmentalizing makes itself subject to mental separation quite easily.

This separation is duality at work, but that duality is operationally a useful phenomenon. The problem arises when the separation is believed to be real.

When Essence from the right hemisphere generated OBSERVING and sent that information to PERCEPTION, then the operation of OBSERVING became a memory trace.  When OBSERVING was then connected to every NAME -FORM becoming evident within perception it became separated as OBSERVER and that experience was transmitted to CONSCIOUSNESS.

The initial CONSCIOUSNESS of "ALIVE" was melded with "OBSERVER" so that consciousness experiences "I am ALIVE". That became the major STAINING of CONSCIOUSNESS.

RAGA, THE DAUGHTER STAINING SENSATION

You will remember that the function of SENSATION was RECOGNITION.

When Identity enters there is an insecurity with regards to recognition and so some events are recognized as novel when that is not at all certain. The problem is in the level of certainty involved in the "best fit" operations.

The result is a slowness of responses and indecision. The naturally SENSITIVE person then is observed as being CONFUSED

TANHA, THE DAUGHTER STAINING DISCRIMINATION

You will remember that discrimination has as its fiunction APPROACH-AVOIDANCE-NEUTRALITY.  With identity presence the experiences normally connected to these as AFFECT-DISAFFECT-EQUANIMITY is converted within COGNITION as LIKE-DISLIKE and INDIFFERENCE.

Colored then with a mass of associations which contaminates cognition futher particularly LIKE and DISLIKE are given a thousand new experiences with corresponding NAMES. An example is the generation of LOVE-HATE-INTELLECTUAL INDIFFERENCE.

The Naturally DISCRIMINATIVE person is seen as ACQUISITIVE.

In the Pali Canon, several discourses explicitly refer to three types of acquisitiveness:

Teachings describe the craving for sense objects which provide pleasant feeling, or craving for sensory pleasures. Taṇhā is a term for wishing to have or wishing to obtain. It also encompasses the negative as in wishing not to have. We can crave for pleasant feelings to be present, and for unpleasant feelings not to be present.

TANHA MEANS "THIRST" AND HER DIRECT OPPOSITE IS EQUANIMITY.

ARATI, THE DAUGHTER STAINING PERCEPTION

The staining of PERCEPTION is quite clear it is the generation of OBSERVING as a separate phenomenon and a complex separation of all things into DUALITY which is considered real.

The naturally INTELLIGENT person is seen as one with AVERSION.

ARATI MEANS "AVERSION" AND HER DIRECT OPPOSITE IS BENEVOLENT AFFECT.

MARA HIMSELF, THE STAINER OF COGNITION

COGNITION is stained by the association with memory in which there is distinct storage of associations divided as VISCERAL-EMOTIONAL-MENTAL.

These associations operate within cognition with varying strength depending upon the conditions and upon the dominant temperament of the apparent individual.

They have been reified as Identities which are completely subliminal and can only be observed by diligent observation of behavior.

MARA MEANS  "CONDITIONED EXISTENCE" AND HIS DIRECT OPPOSITION IS NON-EXISTENCE.
