methodology it is recommended that the following two

Have you attained the pure, original ocean of insight and knowledge of Essence, "zhi", and Substance, "shi"? If you haven't attained it yet now that you are gathered here, do you see the green mountains before you?

If you say you see then how do you see?

If you say you do not see then how can you say that the green mountains are not visible?

                                                            Do you understand?

The fact is that your pure, original ocean of insight and knowledge of Essence and Forms includes seeing and hearing (and senses of the other sense doors).

If you understand then it is "just so," and even if you do not understand it is still "just so".

 Xuanzang 玄奘

Essence is that state in which the Senses are confirmed as operating but without discriminative content. In other words, the confirmation that senses are operating, but without a consciousness of what is sensed.

The full knowlwdge of Substance inludes its two faces of Form and Emptiness, but Emptiness is not Empty in the traditional sense. It is empty, not like vacuity, which is the absence of characteristics generated by the mind, but as Substance or Form which is Undifferentiated.
