Making Evident the Entrapment

xiǎn means "to manifest", "to display" or "to make evident."

牢笼 láo lóng means: comprehension in the sense of "getting control over" or "entrapping."

First it must be understood exctly what clear comprehension is. It is not, as one might suppose, a comprehension of life or any ideas or concepts that is "clear" or "understood." Neither is it Mindfulness, although there is a clear relation between them.

When there exists an undifferentiated mass of irritation, or stimuli if you prefer, there is a moment when some part of that mass becomes extracted. That is part of the left-brain function to give form to what has been selected by the system quite naturally as needing attention. Immediately using a "best fit," the form receieves an appropriate name from memory.

What you have received at that moment is NOT clear comprehension.

It is a product of the moment of "clear comprehension" which takes one part of the total experience. It is the experience of that election by the natural system that is the clear comprehension.

It is evident also that the Identity craving and clinging  generates moments of clear comprehension and that the habit strength of these actually drives the natural and timely clear comprehension into the background.

So clear comprehension has no content in and of itself.

It is an experience that there has been an extraction from the mass of available data.

Clear comprehension occurs so frequently that  consciousness is not aware of it and cognition actually chains these clear comprehensions together so that it seems that there is a continual observing.

You can think of these moments of clear comprehension then as "mind moments," which can be separated from the apparently constant act of observing. Realize also that this clear comprenension occurs in every sensory modality.

Furthermore, this clear comprehension occurs with the recognition and recollection of data from memory.

These moments of clear comprehension are noted by attention and that information is transferred to the right heisphere for use there in the process which we call Essence.

Now the task of the Contemplation of Clear Comprehension is to experience directly these clear comprehensions and see that they are mind-generated in order to bring content form and name to the system to aid in dealing with irritations from within or without.
