Defensive Qi Energy

Wei Qi

IN CONSTRUCTION

Here in the illustration we see two players competing in the game of Wei Qi, which is a game unlike many others that has as its base defensive energies. While here we see two players in competition, for the most part the two major components of the living bodies' defensive qi is in harmony and balance and the enemy is illness.

Here we are going to deal with Defensive Qi with these two different aspects:

But remember that fundamentally there is no such thing as Defensive Qi, for that is only name that is useful for the description of an interrelated whole that is greater than the sum of it parts.

The two aspects of Defensive Qi are:

1. AFFERENT Defensive Qi is generated from correct Breathing, which distributes the air generating the energy necessary for cell nutrition and balance and Nutritious refined food that is vigorous and generates a fast-flowing energy.

2. SENSORY Defensive Qi. This Qi does not appear at first glance a defensive system, but it actually is, for its function is to capture all irritations which impinge upon the five senses and the signal that thinking is about to take place.

These impinging irritations we also call stimulation and the function of the sensory system is to capture whatever presents itself in order to determine if it is a threat or a benefit to survival. Thus it is effectively defensive.

It is this Sensory Defensive Qi which is so essential in the initial rebalancing of the system.

PHYSIOLOGICAL DEFENSIVE QI

The distribution of Physiological Defensive Qi has two features: the " linking of the flow of energy" to what is called Nutritive Qi which passes along Twelve Regular Channels, and "free-flow energy" that is distributed all over the body.

Nutritive Qi flows within the vessels while Defensive Qi flows out of the vessels.

The main functions of Physiological Defensive Qi include three aspects:

1. Protecting the body surface from the invasion of external pathogens by permeating the muscular striae and the skin, thus controling opening-closing of the muscular striae.

2. Warming and nourishing Zangfu Organs, skin and hair, muscles, and other elements, to maintain the normal body temperature and ensure the normal activities of the organs and tissues.

3. Controlling the opening and closing of the sweat pores.

Zang fu organs are a Yin group consisting of Liver; Heart and Pericardium; Spleen; Lungs and Kidney, and a Yang group consisting of Large Intetines, Gall Bladder, Urinary Bladder, Stomach, Small Intestines and the Triple Burner (San jiao).

SENSORY DEFENSIVE QI

The five principal organs of Sensory Defensive Qi are the eyes, the ears, the nose, the tongue and the sensors known as touch, which include those of pressure, pain and heat.

The true detectors are of course the rods and cones of the retina of the eye; the Vestibular hair cells of the ear, which are stimulated by movement of fluid in the semicircular canals and the utricle and saccule; the olfactory bulb of the nose; the taste buds of the tongue and the proprioceptive and other sensing receptors, including pressure and temperature.

While these sensors are the key to all receiving, the defense rests in the program components which deal with irritations to the system.

The main task of these sensors is to pass along that information where the experiences are investigated through comparison with past experiences in memory and the essential task of the sensory system is to advise the system whether the irritation is new or has been encountered before, in which case it can be correctly identified as being a danger to the system, a benefit to the system, or a neutral event.

If the stimulus is new and unrecognized, then an alarm is sent out and further investigation is initiated.

The reception is a very complex system, and it works perfectly well if there is no interference to the system.

Imagine now what happens if the system of recognition as a peril or a benefit fails. Well, that is precisely the sort of error which is constantly occurring due to the interference of stained information generated in the first instant by the self-interest of the Identity complexes of Confusion, Acquisition and Aversion, which identify the irritations in error.

The rectification of this erroneous identification requires the elimination of immediate interference of Identity on one hand and the elimination, or at least the setting aside, of stained information which is stored within the system.

This means that one has to walk continually with:

And all this has to be accomplished with the clear consciousness of Vacuity, Unity, Impermanence, Clear Comprehension and the Life force presence. These first accomplished with mindful attention, which is transformed by contemplation into linked unconscious active direct experiences.
