Mahabodhi Sunyata's Tree of Life Page

Now for the thousands who have in the past entered this web page it will be a surprise to find these six Ginkgo leaves upon the title page, so I will try to explain why I made this change.

The web page is unlike most of the others. First it is not static and there is continual change in an effort to meet the "social engagement" requirements of Buddha Dharma that also fulfill the needs of ordinary people, perplexed by the folly and the globalization of the human mind which is taking place in this world and the destruction of the environment and other life forms that support us all.

Second, we do not try to sell anything at all. We only wish to make available ideas and concepts that are noble and otherwise may have gone unnoticed.

When we take a view of Buddha Dharma from afar as it stands like a tree, without a religious aspect, we find that like a tree we can perceive its whole beauty and at the same time know that it consists of:

The original seed, which is the Force of Life

The roots which give essential substance

The trunk which gives support

The branches which spread out to the warming sun

The leaves which gather the light of nourishment

The flowers which bear the fruit of future survival

Six aspects - six Ginkgo leaves

Six Ginkgo Leaves and Six Temple Guardians

But in additipn, in a practical sense, we have six temple Dogs, the ancient breed of Sharpei Chinese. We present them here as symbols of the words and practices of True Dharma, even before Buddha elaborated his Dharma. Thus they represent the original boundless Dharma, the Budhha Dharma and the Chan Dharma of today.

Why then did I select the Ginkgo?

The Ginkgo is a living fossil, with fossils recognizably related to modern Ginkgo from the Permian Age, dating back 270 million years.

270 million years is way before our present civilization took its form. But nonetheless it is a living reminder, a reminder of the Natural Dharma which existed long before the human creature made its aggressive presence known.

So it represents the Dharma even beyond the Buddha Dharma we practice and the Buddhism which has become popular today.
